Support the Liberate Medicine Campaign
In December of 2017, students from the School of Medicine at the University of Washington organized a sit-in to call attention to the school's ongoing and rampant racism. Despite promises that the school would engage in immediate corrective actions following a Call to Action in May of 2016, conditions at the school have worsened under the leadership of Dean Paul Ramsey and Chief Diversity Officer Leo Morales.
We believe this can change, and that a truly liberatory medicine that centers the wisdom and knowledge of oppressed peoples both locally d globally is possible. This starts with new, bold anti-racist leadership at the School of Medicine and the allocation of significant financial resources to start a Liberation Medicine School, which will be run by healers who are rooted in and committed to the liberation of Communities of Color.
These are the demands of the Liberate Medicine Campaign, which are being directed toward UW President AnaMari Cauce and to Administrators at the School of Medicine:
-
Allocate $500,000 per year for the design and implementation of a community-run Liberation Medicine School.
-
Provide full tuition scholarship for Black and Indigenous medical students starting with the entering class of 2020.
-
Require the resignation of University of Washington School of Medicine Dean Paul Ramsey from the position of dean.
-
Require the resignation of Leo Morales from the position of Chief Diversity Officer of UWSOM and the restructuring of the Center for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
